Strengthening agricultural diversity in the field by honoring cultural diversity in the kitchen.
Kitchen Cultivars is a partnership between Seedshed, Glynwood, farmers and culinary professionals developing a new participatory model for variety trials. One that goes beyond conventional trials limited to agronomic data and leads to a holistic and more nuanced understanding of what can be grown, cooked, and eaten in our region.
The goals of Kitchen Cultivars are threefold: agricultural, cultural, and culinary. Through trials and evaluations of regionally and culturally significant varieties, Kitchen Cultivars brings together farmers, culinary professionals, and seed growers from diverse communities to identify varieties that perform well in our region’s fields and kitchens. The trials focus on varieties that give our farmers the ability to grow marketable foods that are aligned with our region’s agricultural, culinary, and cultural foodways.
